Car Hits Boy, Police Investigate

Lae Police have begun their investigation into the death of a boy killed by a car driven by a political executive and Lae businessman on New Years night.

Lae Police Boss, Iven Lakatani said the Police will do a thorough investigation to gather evidence before the driver is charged.

Police say they are working on recreating the accident that happened at Seventh Street on New Years night.

They want to establish the cause of the accident that killed a boy and seriously injured other.

Lae’s Metropolitan superintendent says Police are also checking the vehicle driven by the prominent Lae Businessman and Political Executive to see if the vehicle was faulty.

Police went on to the scene of the accident on Sunday to take photographs of the area and recreate what may have happened on new years night.

They still cannot confirm if the driver was drunk.

It comes after the boy’s father, Joe Raka, told EMTV that certain Police Officers asked for a fee of K150 before they could take pictures.

“I thought it was Police duty to start an investigation, but they even asked for a fee… he asked for K150 to take pictures,” he said.

Last week in a Press conference, Iven Lakatani said, because of the person involved, being a known in the Lae community the Police Service has let him go because no charges have been laid after two days.

“The driver is known so we let him stay out until all investigations and medical reports are done and then he will be invited in for interview on record,” he said.

14-year-old Amos Raka (Pictured) died in hospital after a car hit him while he and his friend were out at 4.30 a.m. to see the arrival of the New Year. His friend is still in hospital.
