Tatana Volleyball Tournament

The Nick & Bonnie Allan Volleyball tournament has lit up the Nenehi Courts on the tiny island of Tatana, just outside of Port Moresby.

Volleyball debutants and star-studded guns are expected to sweep the courts as 56 teams make ready to battle it out in a week-long tourney.

 

Avaira village, located in the North West Electorate in the Nation’s Capital, will be the host to the biggest volleyball tournament ever to be hosted in the area.

 

56 teams will go into a fierce showdown for the Nick & Bonnie Allan title. Nenehi Courts, as it is known in the area, is the battle feild.

 

The village will be a week-long home to 56 participating teams as they compete on the court while enjoying the spectacular downtown setting. Teams were in their colors at the opening ceremony yesterday.

 

Among invited guests was the Eda Ranu Board Chairlady Mary Karo, who spoke on the importance of administering sports. Karo is not new in the sporting arena and has contributed enormously.

 

28 years on the sporting field especially softball diamonds was worth it to utter words of encouragement and support.

 

Avaira Village Councillor Tom Lancan acknowledged the continuous support of Nick and wife Bonnie Allan from company, Bena Construction.

 

The support evolved since the inception of the tournament in 2010, and was proving to be a success from then.

 

Vava volleyball club, the National rep team has shown their presence as well as Gerehu Hillside and Porebada who have proven their worth on court since the beginning. It’s show time for youngsters and National reps to stamp their mark as the tourney unfolds.

 

In the meantime, the village has written a letter to Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko to host a dinner for one of the 2015 Pacific Games participating countries.
