Suspected Arson: Hohola Store Burns Down

A mini supermarket, Chinese owned U-Save Trading, was burnt down in the early hours of this morning in Port Moresby.

After the fire was put out all that remained on the shelves were black charcoal. Rice grains were everywhere, soft drinks, canned foods and refrigerator foods all burned.

The other side of the store contained goods sold in bulk. Some of it was saved, however the rest aided the blaze to spread throughout the building.

Fire trucks arrived at the scene sometime later. Unfortunately the trucks were not able to save the goods inside, but were able to stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Police were there at the scene keeping possible opportunists away from the store.

According to Constable Lambert, the cause of the fire is unknown, but fire fighters suspect it could be arson. Police investigation will be carried out to establish the cause.

A woman lost all her market goods. She sells second hand clothing just next to the store. She wasn’t able to rescue any of her stock worth more than K30, 000.

This store has been rendering it’s services to the Hohola community for many years at reasonable prices. Unfortunately there is nothing left on the shelf.

Police and firemen arrived on the scene but weren’t able to save the store as it went up in flames.
