GoPNG Strengthens Ties

The National Government has renewed its commitment, to enable the smooth transition of benefits from developers to landowners.

This exercise has begun with the PNG LNG project.

Commitments include the Infrastructure Development Grant and infrastructure projects to assist landowner companies, in business development activities.

The National Executive Council has approved the immediate implementation of additional infrastructure projects, committed under the PNG LNG Project, the Umbrella Benefits Sharing Agreement, and License Based Benefit Sharing Agreement.

National Planning and Monitoring Minister, Charles Abel, explained projects will be implemented by the Provincial Government, using the Shared Responsibility Model.

The National Government has taken the approach to manage, develop and implement these projects, with the developer Exxon Mobil, following the project development agreement signed in 2006.

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill pointed out, lack of coordination resulted in the ineffective delivery of services. This was due to poor monitoring, as funds were directly issued to landowners.

Central, Hela and Southern Highlands are the impacted provincial sites that have received their 2013 Infrastructure Development Grants.

The PNG LNG project is Papua New Guinea’s largest investment, expected to transform the country’s economic growth.
