Malalaua Vocational Struggles with Ageing Facilities

By Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Kerema

The only technical institution in Gulf province, the Malalaua Vocational Centre, continues to face infrastructural challenges each year.

Despite over 50 students having registered for the 2016 academic year, Head teacher, Philip Kavara, says the student number has decreased over the years.

The Malalaua Vocational Centre was built in 1974 to teach life skills courses to Gulf students. In the first 20 years of its establishment, it was administrated by expatriates and had enrolled students from both East and West Kerema.

Head Teacher Kavara has been teaching here since 2013, his biggest task is to produce quality outcome with the school’s limited resources.

The centre is entirely dependent on the government’s tuition fee free funds for its operational costs.

The biggest challenge the school has is the limited infrastructure it has. At the moment, it lacks an ablution block, proper kitchen and laundry facilities.
