Toropo clarifies ex-servicemen issue

by Mickey Kavera – EM TV, Port Moresby

Many ex-servicemen living in army barracks in the country have served their time.

They however continue to reside in the barracks despite being asked to vacate. Commander Toropo said that over the years, the department has been working to repatriate the ex-serviceman but was prevented by the courts.

The recent eviction early this month at Goldie Barracks outside Port Moresby has once again brought the issue of PNGDF accommodation to light.

The Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) understands the plight of the ex-servicemen and wants them to cooperate with the department to sort out their issues before been repatriated to their home villages.

Accommodation for PNGDF servicemen is now becoming a worry as many houses at the barracks are occupied by ex-servicemen.

With more soldiers expected to join the force in the coming years to reach the 5,000 mark by 2017, it is hoped this issue of accommodation will be solved.
