Family escapes death when vehicle collides into power pole

By Quinton Alomp – EM TV, Port Moresby

A family of six narrowly escaped their deaths after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a steel, power pole with active lines that collapsed on the vehicle during the collision.

The incident happened this morning at Daure, along the Kanage Street in Six Mile, Port Moresby.

Eyewitness, Josephine Foieke said the driver lost control of the vehicle, a Toyota ten seater land cruiser, and hit the support power pole on the right side of the road.

The steel pole with active lines on the left side, then collapsed onto the road with the active lines creating sparks on the road and the roof of the vehicle, where it landed on.

The family sustained no major injuries from the accident.

PNG Power workers at the scene of the accident told EMTV News that they will work to restore power to the areas affected, in less than two days.

However, residents are concerned that their Christmas celebrations would be observed in the dark, with no electricity supply which would also affect freezer goods.

Resident, Diari Mapiso said that PNG Power should consider replacing old steel power poles as many of them were rusted and corroded, and residents were at risk should they collapse at any time.

Meanwhile, Christmas celebrations in Port Moresby are quiet with no major incidents reported.
