By Elijah Lavett – EMTVNews,Port Moresby

Real Madrid have sacked coach Rafa Benitez after less than half a season in charge, and promoted former French great, Zinedine Zidane to replace him.

Real Madrid President, Florentino Perez, announced the dismissal of Benitez early this week. Zidane, who attended the news conference with his wife and four children said he was very excited about his new position.

Real Madrid has not specified the length of Zidane’s contract as yet. He’s the 11th coach to be appointed by Perez during his two terms in charge.

Perez, who had publicly backed Benitez in recent weeks, said it had been a difficult decision to sack him.

He said Zidane had always tackled the biggest challenges in soccer with “talent and dedication” and noted that the Frenchman knew many of the players well.
