Germany and Egypt Discuss Tourist Safety

by Lorraine Gabina – EM TV International, Port Moresby

German foreign Minister, Frank- Walter Steinmeier, and his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, met yesterday in Berlin to discuss tourism safety measures in their countries. Due to developments over the last few months affecting tourism, Germany and Egypt are determined to work even closer together.

Minister Steinmeier said Germany is supporting Egypt in this sector.

Discussing joint efforts to provide safer environment for foreign tourists, German and Egyptian Foreign Ministers are determined to give a boost in tourism.

This comes after ten Germans were killed in Istanbul on Tuesday in a terror attack.

Steinmeier announced confirmation of ten Germans killed in yesterday’s terror attack in the old town of Istanbul, adding that most of the other victims were German nationals as well.

He added that there is no further information so far that this was a specific attack against Germans.

Safety measures discussed by the ministers also include plans to cover safer flying and hotels for tourists. Both countries also want to work together to reduce tensions between Iran and Saudi-Arabia.

Speaking at the conference, Steinmeier said, “I think I speak for us both when I say that a new confrontation between Saudi-Arabia and Iran is the last thing this region needs right now. That’s why we need to make sure now – and I think we both will work hard to achieve that – that these new tensions and confrontations in the relationship between Iran and Saudi-Arabia will not destroy everything that we started in the final months of last year in search for a political solution in Syria. It must be preserved, that is one reason why we spoke about it today.”
