PNG-India Business Council

By Delly Waigeno – EM TV News, Port Moresby

India’s President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, said Papua New Guinea’s economic growth does not truly reflect the potential of a country bestowed with abundant natural and mineral resources.

He made the comments during his address to the Papua New Guinea Business Council.

The President said India has come a long way from being a food-importing nation to self-reliance in the production of grains and now a net exporter, and that India would be happy to share experience and knowledge with the people of Papua New Guinea.

The Business Council and the Indian business community in Port Moresby hosted the President at the International Convention Centre.

The President seized the opportunity to give his observation on the economy of Papua New Guinea.

He attributed India’s success to having developed high yielding varieties of seeds and improved methods and techniques of agriculture, dairy and poultry farming.

Acknowledging Papua New Guinea’s large area of fertile soil, and vast marine and mineral resources, President Mukherjee said India would be happy to share its experience and knowledge with PNG, including establishing downstream industries and developing the infrastructure required in the different sectors of the growing economy.

The President was then introduced to the Executive Committee of the Business PNG-India Business Council. Patron of the PNG-India Business Council, William Duma, then unveiled the Council’s Constitution.

One of the objectives of the PNG India Business Council, under the new Constitution, is to support and encourage education, exchange personnel, and training schedules at the private sector level between Papua New Guinea and India.
