Rugby League in Gulf Province was thought to be a thing of the past after the code diminished 10 years ago.
In 2013, Emmanuel Morehari, who is now the Kerema Rugby League President, revived the Kerema Rugby League Competition with the help of interested individuals plus local business houses and the Gulf Provincial Government.
“The aim of the competition is to bring together youths and help them through the game of rugby league,” said Morehari.
“We had financial assistance from local businesses within Kerema and the Gulf Provincial Government which to date is still supporting us,” said Morehari.
Today the competition has 8 teams participating.
“We have teams within Kerema and East Kerema and we are planning to bring the game to all corners of Gulf Province,” said Morehari.
The local competition is also a platform for young talents who are aiming to represent their province with the Gulf Isapeas in the inter-city semi-professional competition.
“We’ve been slowly developing the game, but we have talents here. And this year 5 of our local boys have made the Isapeas team which is a bonus for us,” said Morehari.
