More Clinical Schools Needed to Accommodate Trainees

By Bridgette Komatep – EM TV, Port Moresby

Port Moresby General Hospital has provided a clinical setting for final year medical professionals from the UPNG School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Since 1966, final year’students have been undergoing clinical training in one of the country’s premier hospitals, Port Moresby General Hospital.

However, the country now has a new clinical school in Goroka, which will be the second clinical school to provide training for upcoming medical professionals. The concept of medical and clinical schools is to meet the needs of the country in terms of providing manpower for improved healthcare.

It has become apparent that hospitals around the world are used by universities to further assist medical trainees. Hence, since 2014, Goroka District Hospital was declared the second training school.

There are also plans to establish a clinical school in Madang and another one in Kokopo or Kavieng to cater to the New Guinea Islands region.
