New Year’s Car Accident in Port Moresby

By Eric Haurupma (UPNG Journalism Student) – EM TV, Port Moresby

The first day of the New Year started on an unfortunate note for some Port Moresby residents.

A government vehicle with several people on board crashed near the Institute of Public Administration at Waigani.

Two people were seriously injured, sustaining multiple wounds to their head and torso, while the rest fled the scene.

At 7:30am this morning, a Toyota Land Cruiser believed to be from the Prime Minister’s Department, which had several people on board crashed along the Waigani road.

Statements collected from eye witnesses at the scene include statements they said the occupants of the crashed vehicle were under the influence of alchohol. They said the vehicle was speeding along that section of the road, before it eventually crashed at the scene.

Henry Kamita, one of the eye witnesses, said the driver lost control of the steering while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle at the Ensisi Valley round-about.

As a result, it hit the cement pot with the palm tree and light pole on the road side.

As it overturned, the momentum threw these two men out of the vehicle. EM TV arrived at the scene few minutes later and saw policemen assisting them as they lay in obvious agony.

These men sustained serious injuries to their heads and body parts. Speaking off camera, the police said the rest of the occupants had escaped the scene.

Meanwhile, no deaths have been reported by police. Police said those involved will be arrested for drinking and driving during the New Year period.
