Goroka Hospital Workers Walk off Their Jobs

By Bethanie Harriman – EM TV, Goroka

Workers at the Goroka Hospital walked off their jobs today.

The workers had handed in mass resignations in early December.

This comes against a backlog of concerns raised by workers that include the lack of equipment and medicine to carry out their jobs.

Much of the blame has been levelled on the Eastern Highland’s Provincial Health Authority Board’s inability to provide funding for the Goroka Hospital.

Health Minister, Michael Malabag has suspended the Provincial Health Authority board. He says an independent commission of inquiry will investigate the board in two weeks.

Today, terminated Hospital Manager, Dr Francis Wandi explained that workers walked out from their jobs today out of frustration after many years of complaining.

He says the hospital is in disarray because there is no funding and proper management structures haven’t been updated.

Malabag stated in a media release that “the lack of leadership provided by the Provincial Health Authority board resulted in disintegration of health worker performance and lack of commitment and loyalty to authority affecting health care delivery to the people at the Eastern Highlands Provincial Hospital.”
