By Meleasie Goviro – EM TV News, Port Moresby

PNG will for the first time host APEC’s 42nd Transportation Working Group Meeting from April 4-7.

Over the course of four days, delegates from four major expert groups under the Transportation Working Group (TPTWG) will convene to discuss APEC transportation policies.

Department of Transport Secretary, Roy Mumu, said the meeting would be a great avenue for PNG to leverage its domestic transportations priorities with that of APEC’s.

Approximately 250 delegates will be in attendance, with the meeting to be facilitated in the newly established Waigani Precinct.

The four major expert groups: Aviation, Maritime, Land and Intermodal, and ITS Experts will discuss transportation policies before convening in the main conference rooms for a collective assessment of all outcomes.

Mumu believed the meeting would provide PNGs transport sector agencies and other line government agencies the opportunity to take ownership of the transport development priorities within APEC to develop its transport policy priorities and programs.

“With increased participation and involvement by PNG in the APEC Transportation Working Group meetings and processes over the last two years, we now see the need to leverage PNG’s domestic transport priorities with that of APEC.

“We hope that by hosting the meeting in PNG, our officials will have the opportunity to see APEC at work first hand, and they can capture APEC transportation outcomes in our domestic policy priorities and programs in the year ahead,” Mumu said.

The APEC meeting will also cover other specific matters including women in transport.
