Reported Cases Reveal Women Seek Counseling After Being Deserted by Men

By Colleen Barilae – EM TV News, Lae

Morobe’s Social Welfare Services Coordinator, Emily Boski, has revealed that an average of 10 women come to seek counseling after being deserted by their men.

It comes following average household units being affected by a high cost of living, and the struggle of fending for their families.

In one month, over 200 cases are being reported, most involving women and children being abandoned by men.

Boski says the factors causing men to leave their wives and children sometimes develop from economic burdens like a high cost of living.

She also says most complainants who come in to report their problems come from families where a man’s roles and responsibilities are ignored.

Most of the cases reported to welfare services are supported by policies under the Lukautim Pikinini Act, which protects the rights of children.

Some clients who report cases only seek to receive legal procedure advice, or counseling on their family problems.

Social welfare services plan to minimise these problems by creating community awareness activities to maintain order at the community level.
