In line with the global campaign Every Woman Every Child, UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, reiterated the importance acknowledge the lives of women and children, when talking about human rights and equality.
At an Every Woman Every Child high level event, co-organised with the UN Women, Ban Ki-moon said as Secretary General he has strongly committed to improving the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents through the movement.
“The path to success is the path of human rights.
“When we boost equality in schools, businesses and government, we improve health and well-being,” he said.
Information gathered worldwide reveals disturbing data of millions of lives lost, mostly from preventable causes. An estimated 289,000 women died in pregnancy and childbirth in 2013; around one in ten girls under 20 has been a victim of sexual violence; 2.6 million babies die in the last 3 months of pregnancy or during childbirth; and one in three children fails to reach the full (physical, cognitive, psychological and/or socioemotional) potential, due to poverty, poor health, insufficient care and other risk factors to early childhood development. But this isn’t all. There’s more data that publicises the need for more to be done.
Because of these alarming statistics, the Global Strategy was created. Aiming for the highest convenient health and well-being standards, the strategy takes a life-course approach, looking at the physical, mental and social aspects.
“This Strategy aims for a world where every woman, child, and adolescent not only survives but thrives. A world they transform with their immense potential,” the Secretary-General said.
Ban Ki-moon also announced that a High-Level Advisory Group of world leaders was put together to help guide the progress in the area, and nine experts appointed to report on the health of women, children and adolescents.
The Global Financing Facility launched in Addis Ababa last year will be supporting the Every Woman Every Child movement for funding work in getting necessary results.
“Every Woman, Every Child has already saved millions of lives. More than 40 countries and 120 stakeholders have committed to more than $25 billion over the next five years to carry out the Global Strategy.”
Ban Ki-moon further calls on the global community to join the push for greater health, equality and prosperity in the world.
“I hope we have great promises of support – and even stronger action to keep those promises.
“When we carry out the Global Strategy and realize the Sustainable Development Goals, we will transform our world for generations to come.”
