World Intellectual Property Day

PNG is one of many countries that marked World Intellectual Property Day, which highlights the significance of having legal ownership rights to designs, inventions or trademarks.

This year more than 100 students from five selected Lae schools, including Unitech’s computer science department, were reminded of copyrights in technology.

Registrar, Amelia Na’aru, says the Intellectual Property (IP) Office seeks to also uphold the rights of a party’s ownership to creations or inventions.

Fake or imitated creations have long been an issue in the area of technology, which in most cases calls for protection

Na’aru explains that the trend of productions in technology is slowly moving fast, so the IP laws have to be present to regulate them.

Apart from property rights, the intellectual property office sees that knowledge about ownership rights on certain inventions is needed.

Some of the students who were present gave their thoughts on how they see copyrighting as an important aspect in artistic creations.

The computer science department of the PNG University of Technology, which engages in researching technology, was an important participant.
