Sustaining barramundi in Western Province

The PNG Sustainable Development Program (PNGSDP) is embarking on an exciting agribusiness development initiative in the South Fly District of Western Province. This will see the planting and production of vanilla, black pepper and a refurbished export-orientated barramundi hatchery.

The hatchery part of a 2009 program will be set up to restock the river system as well as to expand and professionally manage the export of barramundi out of Western Province.

Youth groups recently visited the facility and were given a presentation on the biology of the barramundi species as well as a tour of the facility.

Hatchery Manager, Selma Pamolak, says there must be fishing practices enforced in the country so it will protect the population of barramundi in the Fly River system.

The South Fly Agribusiness is set to create over 270 jobs as well as support over 500 smallholders who will farm their own land as part of an integrated business system.
