PNG to attend U’18 Oceania Rugby Union Cup

By Fidelis Sukina – EMTV Sports, Port Moresby

Not as popular as rugby league, rugby union globally hosts regional and overseas tournaments sanctioned by world rugby. The most common sport format associated with the code is the sevens.

For Papua New Guinea, the senior men’s and women’s national teams have participated in international tournaments, but for the juniors, PNG now has the chance to showcase that talent in the Oceania U18 sevens championships in November.

Capital Rugby Union Competition Manager, Paul Joseph made the announcement during the Sport’s Tok Seven’s launching.

The eligibility is simple: you have to be talented in the game but turning 18 this year, to be part of the team and for those under 18, have to have parental consent is mandatory.

The harsh reality for PNG Rugby Union is that there is no effective nationwide junior competition in the sport, and players in that age group are forced to play with others above their age.

The Sports Tok Easter Seven’s will for the first time, have an Under 18 division to start the talent identification process in preparation for the November Fiji tournament.

The U18’s won’t be playing for prize money, but to have a chance to play in their age group and realize their full potential in the sport of sevens.
