NID Registration: Government calls on Public Servants to be Registered by December

By Sharlyne Eri – EMTV News, Port Moresby

The government has directed for all public servants to be registered with a NID card by December, this year.

To ensure this happens, the Department of Personnel Management has partnered with the Civil and Identity Registry to get all public servants registered.

Registrar General, Michael Kumung, said 32 government agencies have completed registration so far, however, he could not give an exact figure of registered public servants due to technical issues.

Mr. Kumung said the registry has arranged registration teams into different sectors with public servants been one sector.

This move is just one of the other steps that the registry is taking to meet the target of registering everyone by 2021.

Another step is signing of MOU’s with provinces and districts to conduct registration. Under these MOU’s, district and provincial registrars will be appointed and NID cards will be printed in the districts and provinces.

Catchment provinces for NID registration are NCD, Central, East New Britain, East Sepik, Morobe and Western Highlands.

Since the rollout of the NID project in 2015, a total of 490, 000 of the country’s population are registered.

Even with this significant number, challenges are inevitable however the registry is coping with promising results.
