PNG to tap into Advance Technology to Address Natural Disasters

The National Disaster Office and the Climate Change Development Authority continues to maintain collaboration in addressing Natural Disasters in the country.

The APEC 14th Emergency Preparedness Working Group (EPWG) Meeting has stirred up new ideas on how PNG can adopt high technologies from other economies to improve the early response monitoring and tracking systems and technologies in the country.

Managing Director of the National Disaster Office, Martin Mose said people were their focus when they are responding to disasters.

“The other APEC economies have their own way of addressing disaster and reducing the risks and it’s about time we sit together to see how best PNG can tap into those according to our owns needs.

“We will make sure that methods and techniques are suitable for our people to better serve them,” says Mr Mose.

“Building up and strengthening our community must be the approach as it is an issue of good governance as well,” adds Mose.

He added that all interventions happening was leading towards embracing that and building up communities and trade capacity to give people the urge that they deserve so that everyone could benefit.

The Managing Director for Climate Change Development Authority, Ruel Yamuna has also shared the same sentiment and is confident that with the Disaster Policy already in placed, it would help PNG build its existing technologies for climate monitoring and tracking.

“The use of the early response technology will help us adapt to natural disasters and to be more mindful of the risks,” says Mr Yamuna.

He also added that it would assist in managing real time scientific information and to disseminate that information to the communities.

Both Agencies are now looking forward to address PNG’s disaster’s need at the Senior Disaster Ministers Meeting in Kokopo on September 25 – 26.
