South Fly Affected Communities Raise Concerns on Slow Response by Government

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Communities in South Fly have urged Disaster authorities to fast-track the assessment of rivers in their area.

They urged Controller Dr. William Hamblin to assist as food sources become scarce, and waterways remain contaminated. Many have also expressed disappointment over the Government’s slow response to affected communities in Western Province.

All small rivers linking to the Fly River were affected following the massive 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck a month ago. Since then, the people have used other means to access clean water for cooking and washing. However, this has slowly decreased with all waterways contaminated as floods continue upstream. Many have been left with more questions than answers.

South Fly MP, Sekie Agisa, says the recent passing of the Restoration Authority Bill will capture relief efforts, assessment of the destruction caused and restoration of services.

Controller Dr William Hamblin told the Community that assessment work is nearing its end, and relief will begin soon. This will be followed by the supply of medical drugs and other assistance.
