The Government’s push for proposed amendments to the Organic Law on National and Local Level Government Elections has been criticized by the Opposition.
Opposition leader Don Polye, says the amendment will limit the ability of candidates in the 2017 General Elections, and questions why the government did not table these amendments in the past 5 years.
Backed by executives from various coalition parties, Mr Polye said there are uncertainties surrounding the law, given the short turnaround before the 2017 General Elections.
He echoed his call to the Government this morning not to push the proposed amendment announced recently by the Government for increase in Nominations fees in the National and Local Level Government Elections.
Polye believes the schedule for the passing and debating of the law in parliament and the gauging of public opinion, is very limited. The Opposition front man also claims that MP’s are yet to receive a formal notice before the bill is introduced in parliament.
Political Party executives have also signed a communiqué calling for free and fair elections, and for the Government to consider the effects of this proposed law.
