Airline Operators Suspend Goroka Flights

The National Airport’s Corporation has issued a notice to all airline operators that the Goroka Airport, in Eastern Highlands will be closed after 1pm and will take effect as of Saturday November 19, 2016.

In the next five days, work will be carried out to rectify ripped pavement on the runway.

Since Wednesday airline operators have cancelled their schedulings as safety is their primary concern.

PNG Air was the first, to cancel its flight operations into Goroka Airport.

Chief Commercial Officer, Paul Abbot, told EMTV News that safety is a priority and flights will resume once the problem is rectified.

PNG Air said to resume flights on the 24th this month.

“After our internal review, we have ceased operations into Goroka temporary, because we have concerns with the runway. We felt it has compromised our safety standard,”

“We will continue to challenge our safety standards so that we can provide a better service for the people of PNG,”

Air Niugini will also cancel their flights, according to General Manager, Ground Operations and Aviation Security, Marco McConnell.

But today, an Air Niugini flight flew into Goroka and will resume normal flights tomorrow.

The National Airports Corporation says once the problem is fixed, airline operators, should resume their normal scheduled flights.
