A small reception was staged last night in Port Moresby to welcome the 16 FIFA teams that will be taking part in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016.
It was hosted by NCD Governor, Powes Parkop, and attended by representatives of the 16 teams.
The event was one way of promoting the diversity of Papua New Guinea and making the athletes feel at home.
The reception was staged in the Melanesian way, with traditional dancers welcoming each delegation as they entered the venue.
It involved dancers from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Kairuku in the Central province and selected groups from the Highlands Region.
President of Papua New Guinea Football Associations, David Chung, said the World Cup is huge for Papua New Guinea and says it will leave behind a legacy.
The welcome reception gave an insight into Port Moresby as the Host City.
With less than 24 hours to the opening FIFA matches, the Prime Minister, Sports Minister and NCD Governor are thankful for the support from the FIFA officials and other supporting bodies for bringing the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 to Papua New Guinea.
PNG Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill said, the country has faced a number of challenges in preparing for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016, however the time has come and PNG stands ready to give its best in hosting one of the biggest sporting events in its history.
Host Governor, Powes Parkop, said Port Moresby is ready to give the visiting athletes a memorable experience during their stay and urged them to be ambassadors of the country.
All FIFA matches will be televised live on EMTV throughout the two weeks of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016.
