United Church Establishment In Gaire, 25 years on

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Hundreds of United Church worshipers from Gaire village, in the Central province, have celebrated 25 years of the United Church establishment in Gaire, yesterday.

The celebrations commemorated the arrival of pioneer London Missionaries in the village over two decades ago.

The event started off with a joint service at the Pune United Church, in the middle of the village.

Following the service, senior church members including Central Governor, and a local Kila Haoda officially opened the model of the first United Church in Gaire.

Since the arrival of the London Missionaries, the Gaire community has seen an increase in the number of locals fellowshipping in United Church.

Today, there are over 20,000 United Church worshippers in Gaire and the UC has become one of the main denomination for villages along the Magi Highway.

The model of the first United Church in Gaire is seen as an important symbol for the UC community.

A symbol that will remind them of the first contact their elders had with the missionaries, and one that they can reflect on the start of Christianity in Gaire.
