The ‘No Betel Nut Chewing Day’ was celebrated across the country by the Department of Health on Friday.
It was a good turnout by the general public during the No-betel nut Chewing Day celebration.
Organised by the Department of Health,there were talks on how harmful chewing betel-nut can cause to the human body.
Chief Dentist of National Department of Health Dr Matupi Apaio says,there is great evidence of mouth cancer spreading like bushfire.
This is because the prevalence of chewing in all age group is increasing.
He added that 98 % of mouth cancer patients are betel-nut chewers, andthe risk is greatly increased when combined with smoking and the use of alcohol.
Secretary for Health Pascoe Kase stressed that many people have died on curable disease such as mouth cancer.
Kase says mouth cancer is deadly and prevention by avoiding the risk is vital.
The day’s celebration included songs and dramas depicting the bad effects of chewing betel-nut and keeping the community healthy and clean.
