The once neglected Kundiawa to Gewa road is now receiving recognition from the government.

Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill says, the government and Asian Development Bank are working through mutual understanding, to develop the roads.

Mr O’Neill said, the government’s high priority in the next two and half years is the highlands highway and feeder roads links. He says the Gewa road will now open-up other links which Madang is one.

“Government will fix the highlands highway with the help of people and better understanding”, O’Neill added.

The PM said another contract will be extended, and tender set out to allow the development of vital feeder roads.

Kundiawa Gembogl MP, Tobias Kulang described the road as an economic corridor for Simbu province.

“This road is declared as a national road but has been neglected over the past 15 years”, said MP Kulang. But thanks to the O’Neill-Dion Government, people will be able to access services through this road again, he added.

Asian Development Bank and GO PNG funding has now seen first stage of 10.6 kilometres for the Kundiawa-Gewa road, completed at the cost of K30 million.

From the Gewa road, 16 kilometres will be extended to reach Madang, Kulang said.
