Kimbe’s Opening Ceremony was an Eye Opener Despite Odds

A good start is always the case in every major event, and 2017 PNG Games was no exception as the host, West New Britain Province beats all odds to give a spectacular grand opening.

The Oil Palm town came alive in the early hours of the morning with visitors witnessing the traditional village Chiefs travel in by canoe to give their blessings. It was followed by ‘Pasin West’, where food items and pigs were distributed to the participating teams.

Kimbe town Mayor, Jackson Endo was honoured with the execution of this program which occurred at Bernard Vogao Memorial Park in the heart of Kimbe town.

This part of the opening ceremony includes choir and famous tree dance by local groups and food items and pig distribution.

“It certainly was spectacular; I was in the main arena with the athletes and kept ducking down when the PNGDF CASA came, racing so low towards us,” Jean Metuvai said.

Sasi Muthuvel Stadium, named after Sasindran Muthuvel, the governor of West New Britain Province hosted the main part of the Opening Ceremony. At around 1pm, the gates were opened and thousands of excited people flocked in to the newly built classic and scenic Muthuvel Stadium.

And yes, it was a day full of life and enjoyment and everyone who attended marvelled at the turn out of the event. Officially opened by Governor General, Sir Bob Dadae, the crowds were entertained by traditional ‘singsing’ groups from different provinces that signified the province to be home of people from all over PNG.

The crowd witnessed the thrilling sky diving and the PNG Defence CASA plane flying very low at the Muthuvel Stadium. The day’s ceremony ended on a high note with prolonged fireworks by Lamana Fireworks lighting up Kimbe’s skies.

A Opening Ceremony that many who witnessed will not forget, truly spectacular and everyone left happy. It was a success against all odds that delayed the Games which was supposed to be held in March this year, but moved to November because of issues of venues being incomplete and the West New Britain weather.

Meanwhile, Mayor Endo urges the athletes to behave themselves as they represent their provinces in the true spirit of sportsmanship.

“I would like to encourage you all to demonstrate self-control and discipline during the Games; BSP 7th PNG Games is another point where you can get prepared for other games outside.”
