The Surfing Federation of PNG is preparing to host for the first time, a World Surf League tournament for longboard, in Madang, Tupira and Bogia districts.
The event that took at least nine years of negotiations between world surfing body and PNG Surfing has been finally cemented.
The event will attract longboard surfers around the world. It will be organised and broadcaster by the WSL.
Sylvia Pascoe, a local organiser from Surfing PNG, highlighted the importance of tourism, and how it will boost Madang Province’s local economy.
Locals are slated to benefit from the exposure.
Miss Pascoe says, the event will not be a one-off event but has potential to sprout into an annual affair.
Surfing PNG, however, is still appealing to the Government for financial assistance. But is ready to showcase PNG’s top class waves and beaches.
Meanwhile, President of PNG Surfing Association, Andrew Abel, is in the Hainan Island of China, to demonstrate what PNG has to offer come next year.
The event will start on the 18th and end on the 25th of March.
