Works Partners with JICA

A program to strenthenthe project implementation capacity ofthe Works Department will kick off next year with help fromthe JapanInternational Cooperation Agency.

Officials from both JICA andIngerosec Corporation met with Works Secretary, David Wereh, and presentedtheir draft work plan yesterday.

Secretary Wereh, in welcoming this partnership, said it is not an easy task for the department to allthe roads inthe country.

Research has shown that because ofthe limited number and excessive costs of domestic private contractors, 90 per cent ofthe national gravel roads have been left in disrepair.

The project will assist in tackling road maintenance issues by carrying out capacity improverment onthe implementing agencies.

Put simply, this project will try to keep roads in good condition and in a sustainable manner.

The project will be piloted regionally. Provinces to participate inthe piloting phase include Morobe, Western Highlands, East Sepik and West New Beitain.

It will cost K44 million over four years to pilotthe project.

Equipment for this work will arrive in February next year, and work is expected to startthereafter.
