Workshop Highlights Knowledge and Techniques of SME Engagement Among Women

by Colleen Barilae – EM TV News, Lae

A group of women in Lae had the opportunity to share ideas with visiting American speaker from the PNG’s Women Forum, Saran Kaba Jones.

Kaba Jones spoke of successful entrepreneurial ideas with women who attended from all parts of Lae city.

The joint-initiative highlighted knowledge and techniques of SME engagement among women.

Today’s gathering in Lae was aimed at educating more women to be engaged and successful in entrepreneurship in their homes.

The gist of the open discussion was to motivate women to become self-reliant and empowered in business, and rise up as women with power in society.

Kaba Jones, who is also a successful entrepreneur in her own right, says women in PNG communities have the potential to excel in business when gender inequality is ironed out.

“Gender Based Violence is a huge problem here, but I am inspired by their resilience and their strength and I’ve come across a lot of women that are taking action at the community level to try and address these issues,” she said.

Most that turned up for the meeting were average SME owners with cooking, tailoring and trade store business skills.

Kaba Jones said being successful in a business takes passion and hard work.

Naomi Gioven, an entrepreneur, said “Women’should learn to share ideas in business. It is the passion that leads one to achieve”.

Female empowerment in PNG continues to be an area that most leaders in the country have been pushing for.

Following Tuesday’s International Women’s Day that aimed to further promote gender equality, women in Lae plan to achieve more in business.

But for many it will be a steep learning curve as they strive towards it.
