Gurakor villagers, in the Morobe Province, are calling for an independent investigation into the death of a woman on Saturday, 21 February, that they claim died of a gunshot wound.
Villagers alleged that the woman was shot by “a stray police bullet” during a confrontation at the Gurakor market.
The woman’s body was transported to Lae’s Angau Hospital morgue on Saturday, accompanied by police and relatives. The body of the deceased is now awaiting a post-mortem to be carried out, to determine the cause of death.
The victim, Gedisau Yanan was in her late fifties; the mother of seven children and several grand-children was killed at Gurakor Village, along the Bulolo Highway.
Eyewitnesses say Gedisau was selling peanuts along the road and a confrontation with police broke out, when she was killed.
Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, was at the morgue on Saturday to see the relatives of the victim. He has called on swift investigations into the death of the woman.
It’s understood that two other people were injured. A man was transported to Lae’s Angau Hospital with wounds to his leg and hands.
Gurakor villagers have since called for an independent investigation team to look into Saturday’s occurrences’.
Provincial Police Commander, Kaiglo Ambane met with villagers yesterday, and assured them that investigations will be carried out to establish the cause of death.
He urged the villagers to keep the Bulolo Highway open for public use.
