Widower, Balem Gunan, publicly thanked the good Lord as he was able to give his wife a decent burial after her body was in the Port Moresby General Hospital morgue for over a year.
He could not afford a proper burial because he is unemployed.
Balem Gunan from Baitata Village in the Madang Province lost his wife from illness in December 2014.
Since then, his wife’s body has been in the Port Moresby General Hospital morgue until last Friday.
Gunan was told to bury his wife along with 17 unclaimed bodies from the morgue in a mass burial at the Nine Mile Cemetery outside Port Moresby.
Fortunately, he received a call from the Rural Development Bank that morning where he was formerly employed, to collect his cheque of long service payments.
The widower said it was his wife’s wish to be buried in his village in Madang.
He asked for assistance from friends and family but no one was willing to assist.
Balem Gunan believes it is the work of the good Lord who came at the right time.
Gunan thanks God for his blessing.
