Papua New Guinea’s HIV Prevalence rate has improved, and has now switched from a generalized epidemic to a concentrated epidemic.

Recent findings show that estimated prevalence of HIV among adults aged 15 to 19 years in PNG in 2012, has dropped to point 52 percent, however, concerned authorities say there is more to be done to rid the country of this epidemic.

Today, a memorandum of understanding was signed at the health department to align the US’ HIV AIDS programs with the National AIDS Strategy 2011 to 2015.

The US Deputy Chief of Mission and Health Secretary signed the MOU this afternoon at the Health Department in Port Moresby.

This will align the HIV AIDS programs with the goal of the National AIDS Strategy, 2011 to 2015.

The USAID funded project, Strengthening of HIV AIDS services for most at risk populations, or MARPs in PNG is implemented by the FHI 360.

FHI 360 partners with the National Health Department, the National AIDS Council Secretariat, and provincial health offices.

Under this MOU, this partnership will be strengthened and put more focus on achieving the goals of the National AIDS Strategy 2011 to 2015, towards an AIDS free generation.

The health experts said there is more to be done in PNG towards an AIDS free generation.

It is estimated that 22 thousand adults and three thousand children were living with HIV in 2012.

The national adult HIV prevalence is estimated to be point 52 with the highest in the Highlands and Southern regions.

Biological data point to a more concentrated type HIV epidemic, linked to key populations at higher risks, like female sex workers and their clients, and men to Men’sex.

Under this MOU, the stakeholders will work in close consultation to continue targeting vulnerable groups, and assist with funding and infrastructural support in existing health centers to address the epidemic.
