The Student Representative Council of University of Papua New Guinea is seeking answers for the ownership of the Games Village.
This comes as Sport Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, stated that the PNG Sport Foundation will be custodian of the facility. They say, the government must echo the same language, since Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, stated 3 times publicly to hand-over the facility to the University.
The UPNG SRC says, this has undermined the university’s capability to manage the facility.
The student’s council said the university has accommodation problems and the Games Village has placed high hopes for students.
In response, Sport Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, says the facility will come under a Joint understanding with UPNG as landlord, and PNG Sport Foundation as government arm to professionally manage the facility.
Meanwhile, Director of PNG Sport Foundation, Peter Tsiamalili, told EM TV News that priority will be for students, but the Federation awaits government direction for terms of reference and how many rooms the university will use.
UPNG has around 5,000 students while the Games Village will house 4,000 athletes and officials.
