Thousands all over Papua New Guinea took to the streets this morning to mark the start of the national week of mourning for the Grand Chief, Sir Michael Somare.
In his home province in Wewak, many dressed in black with their faces painted in mud, marched from Perigo outside Wewak town to the Grand Chief’s residence, and later into the town center.
Town residents were also seen cleaning their residential areas in preparation for the Grand Chief’s arrival next week Sunday.
In Madang, university students from the Divine Word University where up early this morning to show their respects and later marched into town along with town residents.
Similar marches are expected to happen in other parts of the country during the week.
