Touch Footy: Preparations For The Fuzzy Wuzzy Cup

It will be a tribal clash in the sport of touch footy come the sixth BSP PNG games in November in Lae.

Northern Province is up against the provincial giants, and preparation is underway, beginning with the Fuzzy Wuzzy Cup set to fall during our Independence Celebration this year.

As the countdown continues, all BSP PNG games participating around the provinces are on the verge of finalizing teams.

The Northern Province is no exception. Representatives from the land of the Birdwing butterfly will wear green and gold in style in the various sporting codes they will be participating in.

Touch Footy is one of the Sport expected to put up strong rivalries. The Fuzzy Wuzzy cup set for September is an inaugural event which will be used to gage preparation for the Touch team to the 6th BSP Games.

“Oro has been very successful particularly in the sport of touch…. we just want to see our fitness level of the team before going to compete in the PNG Games.” Copeland Gewa, Team Northern.

Invitations have been extended to teams outside the province, including Port Moresby.

“We’ve got teams from Port Moresby and Lae and I’m also happy that we’ve got teams from areas that were affected by the WWII, particularly Gona, Buna and Kokoda all coming to participate. As I speak through the media, we’ve already secured a total of K10, 000 for the prize money”, Mr Gewa said.

Gewa, who is part of the organizers of Team Northern, says the Kokoda Cup will be hosted annually with targets to engage unemployed youth in the province, and fully utilize their sporting skills as they prepare for the Games.
