Its no secret that PNG’s economic and development model is largely dependent on the extractive industry. In fact, the country is covered in exploration licenses and logging permits.
However, with more than half of PNG’s land mass still under customary control, there is constant pressure by businesses and government’s to secure rights and ultimately control from landowners.
For some communities, the pressure is too much, and many, loose the bargaining power to dictate the type of development that occurrs on their land.
