Team PNG Arrives in Glasgow

The Team PNG main Contingent, led by Chef de Mission Emma Waiwai, which left on Wednesday for Glasgow, has finally settled into the Games village.

They walked out from the Glasgow International Airport proudly wearing our national colors upon arrival.

 

Boxing team manager John Avira and members of Team Boxing walked onto the tarmac upon their arrival at the Glasgow International airport from Dubai on Wednesday.

 

It was a small, but impressive entrance right from the airport to the Games Village.

 

Waiwai, while welcoming the team to the XX Commonwealth Games Village, encouraged the athletes and officials to do PNG proud.

 

Waiwai said PNG has a proud history of sporting achieveMen’s at the Commonwealth Games and the 20th Games will be remembered and should be cherished by the upcoming athletes.

 

It was almost 22 hours of travel from Port Moresby to Brisbane, then on to Dubai and finally Glasgow. But the bigger challenge lies ahead when the XX Commonwealth Games kick off next week.

 

However the spirit in the camp is high as PNG athletes recuperated and got into training as well as participating in trial matches for some sporting codes, before the official opening on July 23rd.

 

The main contingent met up with other members of Team PNG who travelled earlier.

 

Our Swimming team left today, and will join the 140 – member Team PNG before the Games.

 

The flag raising ceremony will be tomorrow.
