Slow Work on Lae-Nadzab Highway

By Edwin Fidelis – EM TV, Lae

The Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, told members of various business houses during a forum in Lae, that he is disappointed with the progress of work on the Lae-Nadzab Highway.

The reconstruction of the highway has dragged into its seventh month.

“People have their own views but in my own view, it’s progressing at a snail pace. I would rather like the road work to progress a bit more faster,” the Governor said.

The China Railway Company is changing the face of the road between Lae and Nadzab.

The work started in June last year, however, the engineers are competing with Lae’s unpredictable weather pattern.

The K470 million-road construction is expected to be completed by 2017.

The work that began last June is expected to be completed by 2017, and will cover at least 40 kilometres, between Lae city and Nadzab airport.

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, who visited Lae on numerous occasions has also expressed disappointment on the progress of the road construction.

He has also issued warning for a possible change to the contractors, if the delay continues.

“We have spent K16 million already. Why is the road not moving. Why is there’so much delay?” the Prime Minister asked.

The new highway is expected to increase traffic efficiency, and also improve what is currently, a 20 minutes journey.
