Police Commissioner, Gary Baki, has issued a stern warning to all security companies to have their personnel trained and registered before the APEC conference in 2018.
Enforcing new standards means tougher compliance measures for all security firms.
Within the next 12 months, all security companies will be expected to have their personnel trained to meet government specified requirements.
Each security officer will be expected to be registered as a security professional with a government permit to operate.
As police commissioner, Baki is also the commissioner of the security industries commission, the body regulating the activities of all security firms.
He says by 2018, when APEC leaders meet in Port Moresby for the first time, all firms must have trained, registered personnel to provide additional security.
Over a period of 30 years, the security industry has grown significantly with companies concentrated in growth centers of Port Moresby, Lae, Mt. Hagen and Rabaul.
Their activities have diversified from having static guards, to armed money transfers and personal bodyguards.
It is one of Papua New Guinea’s biggest employers, but it also is one where its workers are the worst paid.
With tougher measures being put in place, it’s hoped the industry’s image will be improved.
