Resource Materials Needed

by Fabian Hakalits – EM TV, Buka

Haku Day High School of Buka in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville is facing a shortage of curriculum resource materials for both teachers and students.

Head Teacher, John Irako, told EM TV News in Buka, that the shortage is affected by the increased enrolment this year.

Four years ago, Haku Day High School began its first intake and has survived since then.

The school’s ratio is seven teachers to one hundred forty students – three grade nine, and two grade ten classes.

Mr Irako pointed out, under the Tuition Free Fee Policy, that 50% be used in purchasing curriculum materials. But, this has not worked well, due to shortfalls paid by the National Government.

The TFF Policy has affected many schools, says Mr Irako, by not providing the adequate resource materials needed for quality teaching and learning.

Teachers housing is also one main problem. Only four teachers are accommodated, while three others travel from home.

Despite these challenge’s, Mr Irako said the community continues to support the administration in developing the school to its standard.
