Prince Andrew’s Five Day Visit Ends

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV, Port Moresby

His Royal Highness, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, has departed Papua New Guinea, taking with him many memorable momen’s with him during his short five day visit.

The Duke of York departed this morning on the government’s falcon jet, and will return to Buckingham Palace in England via Singapore.

Prince Andrew was in the country to open the XV Pacific Games on Saturday evening, where he described the Opening Ceremony as being “spectacular”.

Two platoons from the correctional service, and members of the Defence Force and the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary Band marched on to the Jackson’s International Airport tarmac to farewell the Prince in style.

Prince Andrew arrived in the county last Thursday and was met with a 21 gun salute. On Friday, the Prince toured the war memorial cemetery at Bomana, and the Don Bosco Technical Institution.

On Saturday, Prince Andrew visited the games village, bbefore officially declaring the Port Moresby Pacific Games open on Saturday evening.

The Duke of York was also on hand to present the medals for the weighlifting events yesterday, as well as to those who competed in the men’s and women’s triathlon event.

The Duke of York will be heading home with fond memories of Papua New Guinea, and we hope to see him return in the not too distant future.
