Prepare For Disaster

Lagui village in the Salamaua Local Level Government of Morobe province is predicted to be the next village community to submerge.

The Lagui people know their village will go under and they aren’t ready for it.

The much talked about government’s plans and strategies to address the climate change issue, on the lives of ordinary people is yet to be felt by coastal communities all over the country.

Lagui village sits on a strip just below edge of Huon plate in the Huon District.

It’s a little landmass that stretches out into the open sea.

But the village of more than 500 men, women and children is facing a serious problem.

The severity of their problem is quite clear. The sea is slowly cutting their village in half.

Every day the men and women worry about the future of their children. They worry about their food and water source. They worry about their ancestral land that has been their home for generations.

The impact of Climate change is one that is real for the people of Lagui. They know that their village will soon go under.

Like Lagui village, it is a part of many other coastal communities all over PNG that are facing similar problems.

With the sea level rising every year and the lack of meaningful actions from the government, many villages along the coastlines like Lagui will be displaced by the continuous nature’s onslaught
