Porgera Liquor Ban Lifted

By Mickey Kavera – EM TV, Port Moresby

Though the liquor ban in Porgera has been uplifted, police warned that they will not tolerate people being drunk and disorderly.

The ban was imposed last year during the State Of Emergency call out, by the Enga Provincial Government.

The smuggling of liquor into the Porgera mine town has been a daunting task for the security force and the local police.

This came about from a liquor ban imposed in the Province last year during the SOE call out by the Enga Provincial Government.

However, the ban was recently uplifted, with police warning local businesses to abide by conditions.

Owner of Sai Lodge, Jones Pawe, was trading liquor before the ban, but was stopped.

The uplifting of the ban comes as a relief to him, as his license was given back.

His license will be closely monitored to ensure conditions of entry into his licensed premises, are not breached.

He says, he will cooperate with police to closely monitor and ensure that only genuine customers enter his premises.

Police have warned that anyone found to cause trouble in public with be arrested and charged for drunk and disorderly.
