Polye Steps Down as Opposition Leader

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Kandep MP, Don Polye, has stepped down as Opposition Leader.

Polye made the announcement yesterday while appointing Bulolo MP, Sam Basil, as the new leader.

Polye’s move to appoint the former Deputy Opposition Leader comes after the National Court ordered a recount for the Kandep Open seat that Polye represents.

Rabaul MP, Dr. Allan Marat, says other leaders implicated with the courts should also do likewise.

“We as leaders must act responsibly to allow the law take its course,” Dr. Marat said.

He added that the example by the former opposition leader Polye is of standard.

Meanwhile, Basil says the opposition will work closely as a unit and continue the good work of the former leader.

Basil has called on Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, to do the same and save the integrity of the office.

Kikori MP, Mark Maipakai, is now the new deputy opposition leader.
