Police Minister gives assurance over Investigation into Bumbu Police Barracks

By Lucy Kopana – EMTV News, Lae

The Bumbu Police Barracks housing project in Lae, Morobe Province is still incomplete after more than five years. Police Minister, Jelta Wong said addressing this issue will be a priority this year. “I’m still waiting and pushing for an investigation into some of the dealings that went on with that building.”

The project was initiated to address housing issues faced by officers in the constabulary. The construction of the seven duplexes began in 2012 with plans to complete building in 2014, however, the houses are still incomplete. In 2017, Police Commissioner, Gary Baki, dismissed claims that the police department had not paid the contractors.

“I know we have spent a lot of money paying contractors and they are obligated to ensure that the barracks is completed.”

Mr. Wong says he will follow up on this issue to ensure those responsible for the delay are dealt with.
