Police Capture Suspect Allegedly Involved in Attack on Female Students at Lae Nursing College

By Martha Louis – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Police have captured one suspect, allegedly involved in an incident on Saturday morning where two female students at the Lae Nursing College were attacked.

Police said four suspects entered the Lae School of nursing college through the ablution blocks.

The suspects stole personal properties and money and sexually assaulted the two students before escaping.

Police said the suspects may have had spare keys to the rooms but were not able to open the doors with the keys. The sixth room was open, which the suspects gained entry from.

Two of the students who shared a room were assaulted by the armed men. Personal properties were robbed from them.

The students called for help but, it was a while later that security guards came to assist and reported the matter to the Lae Police station.

Lae Metropolitan Commander, Anthony Wagambie Jr, has raised concerns over the type of the ineffective security arrangements at the school of nursing.

While most other schools have a higher level of security for female students, the Lae Nursing College has an old fence without adequate protection for the girls’ dorm.

Police are continuing their investigations.
